1. What is "Referencing"?
Referencing is the acknowledgement of the information sources you have cited in your assignments.When you write an assignment, you are required to refer to the work of other authors. Each time you do so, it is necessary to identify their work by making reference to it - both in the text of your assignment and in a list at the end of your assignment.
You may have quoted directly or paraphrased them, you must acknowledge the source. Harvard Referencing is one of the most common styles of referencing, primarily used by university students, to cite information sources. The Harvard system uses the author-date method; the references in the assignment text are given in brackets and the list of sources is given in a reference list.
2. What is "Citing"?
Citing is a generic term, used for when you refer to any source, either to give an example or to back up an argument.
Example in the essay text:According to Kotler, et al. (2017) 'traditional and contemporary media of marketing communications such as television and social media can complement each other for call-to-action'.Example in the reference list:Kotler, P., Kartajaya, H. & Setiawan, I. 3. What is "Plagiarism"?
Plagiarism means using another person's spoken or written words, ideas or inventions, music and more, without referencing them. If you cite something in a book, journal, or web page, or hear something in the radio broadcast or podcast, in your assignment without referencing it, then your work is considered plagiarised. Even if you do not aware you have done it, it suggests that you are passing off someone else's work as your own, and offence carries severe penalties that may lead to expulsion from the programme.
