3 Things You Need To Know About Referencing Before Starting An Assignment

Have you ever wonder why you need to do referencing for the assignment? Do you know why your lecturers always ask for citations and reference lists? Are you aware of plagiarism?

These are the most important things you need to know about Referencing before starting an assignment:

1. What is "Referencing"?

Referencing is the acknowledgement of the information sources you have cited in your assignments. When you write an assignment, you are required to refer to the work of other authors. Each time you do so, it is necessary to identify their work by making reference to it - both in the text of your assignment and in a list at the end of your assignment.

You may have quoted directly or paraphrased them, you must acknowledge the source. Harvard Referencing is one of the most common styles of referencing, primarily used by university students, to cite information sources. The Harvard system uses the author-date method; the references in the assignment text are given in brackets and the list of sources is given in a reference list.

2. What is "Citing"?

Citing is a generic term, used for when you refer to any source, either to give an example or to back up an argument.

Example in the essay text:

According to Kotler, et al.  (2017) 'traditional and contemporary media of marketing communications such as television and social media can complement each other for call-to-action'.

Example in the reference list:

Kotler, P., Kartajaya, H. & Setiawan, I. (2017) Marketing 4.0: Moving from Traditional to Digital. New Jersey: John Wiley & Sons.

3. What is "Plagiarism"?

Plagiarism means using another person's spoken or written words, ideas or inventions, music and more, without referencing them. If you cite something in a book, journal, or web page, or hear something in the radio broadcast or podcast, in your assignment without referencing it, then your work is considered plagiarised. Even if you do not aware you have done it, it suggests that you are passing off someone else's work as your own, and offence carries severe penalties that may lead to expulsion from the programme.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic - Berjaya University College

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused many countries to go into lockdown. Malaysia is no exception. We started the Movement Control Order (MCO) since 18th March 2020 and as of today, we are glad to be in the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).

Since MCO started, we have switched all our classes to online mode, hoping that we can return to face-to-face teaching in no time. However, on 27th May 2020, Malaysia Higher Education Ministry said that all university lectures must be conducted purely online until the end of the year.

As such, some of the classes with certain conditions are allowed to return from tomorrow 1st July 2020 onwards. Here are some of the pictures showing the preparation done in Berjaya University College for the returning students and lecturers:
Welcome! but you need to check-in with the QR code by entering your body the temperature screening
Social Distancing in the classroom - take your own notes from now on.
Can you see the cross - seat reserved
Settle down, lecture will start soon...
Don't try to poke your classmates
Some SOPs to follow.

That's all for now. Let us wait until the control order is lifted and you can experience the new normal yourself. Seeing is believing!

What say you about the Standard Operating Procedures?

MCO Extended and Companies Are Screaming

Since my last post, the Movement Control Order (MCO) has been extended twice by the Malaysian Government. We will need to stay at home until 28th April 2020 in order to stop the spread of COVID-19 which has been infected more than 1.6 million people worldwide and claims more than a hundred thousand lives.

Yes, we can understand that there is a big economical impact on businesses worldwide and many people now lost their jobs due to the closure of factories and operations. People are not allowed to go out and it directly affects the consumptions. If we look at the model of National Income, consumptions and productions are highly affected now which leads to a sharp decline in Gross National Income, or we like to measure in the form of Gross Domestic Production (GDP).
We can make it and back to where we stopped before the pandemic.

But come to think about it. what is really happening in a business organization? When a business cannot operate for a period of time for the safety of everyone, is this going to be the end of the world or the world economy will just collapse, dead and that's it? You mean ALL companies will be dead?

Of course not!

Similar to the pandemic of COVID-19 which infected millions of people. Despite the high mortality rate in some countries, it didn't kill everyone. There are thousands of recovered cases around the world. So why some managed to recovered and some not? Medical reports show that patients with health complications have a high mortality rate and those who are healthier have a higher chance of recovery. It means if we are healthy and more strengths to fight with this virus, we may recover but if we are weak and with health issues, we have a lower chance of survival.

Moment of Truth

This is the moment of truth for all the bosses and management teams out there. If a company now needs to cut pay or even close down, it means a lot about the health and sustainability of this company. A well-managed business should have anticipated the threats of macro-environmental factors (PESTLE) and continuously built the strengths or minimizing its weaknesses. The same goes for governments and individuals. This pandemic is a real test to examine our sustainability and survival.

Think about SWOT analysis, blue ocean strategy, competitive advantage, financial sustainability, portfolio management, risk management, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and even corporate governance. At a time like this, we will know which companies have been practicing strategic management effectively and which did not. Eventually, those that are poorly managed before the pandemic will be struggling now to sustain and most probably, they will still suffering even without COVID-19. This is the time for us to identify which companies have strengths to turn the threats into opportunities and which are just too weak to be taken over or have to be disinvested.

We can continue to worry and find ways to cut costs or even closing down businesses, or we can choose to think positively and move forward to start a paradigm shift. Cutting staff or salary is not the only way to survive. If we managed to survive this pandemic, we need to have a drastic change. Management must reflect on how they have been managing their team and businesses in the past, which leads to sustainable issues now... Do not penalize your staffs due to MCO, think of what you have done all these while!

Day 6 of Malaysia Movement Control Order (MCO)

Day 6 of Malaysia Movement Control Order (MCO)

Today is a Monday and surprisingly I don't feel the Monday Blues. The feeling is weird because last month after the Chinese New Year, many of us were saying the next holidays will be in May. No more holidays in March and April....as if we can't wait for the next holidays...

But suddenly this morning, I started to miss my work life. I miss going to work, meeting my colleagues and go to my class to meet my fellow students. Come to think about it, today is just Day 6... come on!

Anyway, I managed to set up a virtual tutorial session with my degree students just now using the CourseNetworking ClassCast-BigBlueButton features. Glad that I can still continue my teaching work at home during the MCO period. I am so happy to see my students participate in the tutorial activities as if we were having a face-to-face session (better than F2F actually).
Just hope the MCO will end soon, containment of the coronavirus can be successful and everyone can go back to their normal life. We must stay positive and continue to do what we can despite the damages and restrictions caused by Covid-19.

Choe says "Stay at Home"!

Day 5 of Malaysia Movement Control Order (MCO)

Day 5 of Malaysia Movement Control Order (MCO)

A lot has changed since we started to stay home under the MCO. The most shocking news yesterday was the 4 new death cases announced by the Ministry of Health (MOH), making the cumulative death of Covid-19 in Malaysia to hit 8. Despite more than a hundred patients have been discharged, there are still many being treated in isolation and in the intensive care unit (ICU) as reported.

Every day I received SMS from the government to stay at home, maintain good hygiene and request for the Tabligh to surrender for a medical check. Some stubborn people still out there and yet to report to the hospital. These are the people who are causing us to stay at home, economy standstill and more seriously, putting everyone in contact at risk! The worse is when I read about news of these people keeping secret of their participation at the gathering and causing the entire hospital to close down for disinfection. This kind of person is so selfish. Religion and moral doesn't teach us to tell lie and cause harm to others. I personally classify them as a criminal during the pandemic time. Heavy prosecution is a MUST!

So far, the government is trying their very best to contain the virus. All the front liners are doing a great job to protect us all. Even the army has been deployed early this morning to assist the police. The situation is not what some people have been sharing on Whatsapp and social media. Everyone is trying their best to help to save our country. We encounter the officers at the morning market. There are very polite asking everyone to quickly buy what is needed and go home. They were controlling the entrance and exit so that everyone can maintain a distance. I see law and order carried out effectively here. So please stop forwarding news that doesn't come from the officials and you don't even know the origin source. We have enough trouble, don't create more issues by spreading fake news!

Even our favorite McDonald's responding to the government MCO with maximum precautions taken. Well done, McDonald's.
Customers will have to queue outside the restaurant and temperature has to be taken before allowed to enter
The kiosks were being sanitized after every order.
Dedicated markings on the floor for customers to wait for their order.
McD staffs @ Taman Sri Gombak, keep up the good work!
As of now, all my friends and family are doing fine and trying to make full use of the time given at home with love ones. Since we just started the MCO a few days ago, we should continue to monitor our health, just in case we have exposed to any contacts at work before 18th March.

Choe says, take care!

Day 3 of Malaysia Movement Order Control (MOC)

Day 3 of Malaysia Movement Order Control (MOC)

Today is the third day of 'Movement Order Control (MOV)' implemented by the Malaysian government to minimize the possibilities of the Covid-19 pandemic spread. Many parts of the world have been doing the same such as lockdown, canceling events, stop schools and universities, travel ban and more. The situation seems to be getting worse without any positive sign, other than the beginning of human testing for vaccines.

I do not know how to express my feeling now but it is definitely not good. After following the news of what happens in China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Iran, and Italy, I have never imagined a situation like this can happen in Malaysia. Watching the news from other countries is totally different than seeing our home country appearing in the news related to this coronavirus.

How I wish this is just a dream, a bad one and I can wake up immediately. While I was going through my phone gallery last night, I saw some pictures of our Christmas party back in December 2010, then New Year Eve gathering with some close friends, and many pictures of the Chinese New Year celebration. Come to think about it, it was just a few months back, we were all living in a normal life until now.

As much as I want to stay positive and optimistic, it is so hard to do so when everything around us is changing. However, we need to tell ourselves there is hope. I hope we all can help to educate everyone we know about the importance of MOV. Whether you are an educator or not, this is the time to use your communication skills, critical thinking, and rational mindset to help save our world.

While our country is trying very hard to protect and save the people, many still don't care and ignore the MOV. I wonder what are they thinking and why they do not have the rationale to see the danger of this virus. It is so difficult to understand the situation now or perhaps, they think all the news out there is fake?

Do not take for granted what we have not. Do not create more problems when you are not even capable of solving any problems. Selfishness will only make others suffer at a time like this.

Please STAY AT HOME if you are a human with a brain to think! Think about those who need to work day and night to save your life if you are infected!!! THINK!!!

What is Wuhan China's Coronavirus?

Just a few hours ago, a report from Channel News Asia stated Wuhan virus death toll jumps to 106, nearly 1,300 new cases (surpass 4,100) in China. This the coronavirus can infect anyone at any age, not just by air transmission but can be spread through physical contact according to China’s National Health Commission (NHC).

I think it is scary but should we panic about it? Perhaps we should learn more about it to protect ourselves rather than being panic and do nothing.

Here are some links that are useful to learn more about the coronavirus:

Why we need to Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) -Updated 8/1/2020

Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA), a very important practice for everyone at any time doing any task. This is something that we all need to embrace because, without PDCA, we might prone to make silly mistakes. Some minor errors made without proper checking might have a big impact. Think about Pareto's Principle, 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes.

<Updated: 21st January 2020>

I found this video very interesting on 'Checking'. Look at how effective can PDCA be implemented in "Day in the Life of a Japanese Delivery Worker"

<Updated: 8th January 2020>

Spotted another error made by Malaysia's largest bank, Maybank. This is on their membership rewards web page, Treatpoints. Look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6, from 50,000 points, the offer during Chinese New Year is 1,499,500 points. Hmm...really?!

Just to give you an example, The Edge (30 Dec 2019) mixed up the image of the latest GoPro Hero 8 Black (RM1,879) with the new Garmin Marq Commander smartwatch (from RM4,699).

What do you think could be the implication of this error. At a glance, some readers might be excited to see GoPro is finally introducing a smartwatch at RM1,879. Meanwhile, some readers may think that Garmin is now working with GoPro which skimming the price of its joint-development product. When the readers found out about the mistake, it may flatten the curiosity for both new products. All parties do not benefit from this minor error but the implication could be drastic.

Think about the minor errors you have made at work, in your studies and personal life, can it be prevented with better checking? How might it change the results or the impact of our action, only if we check before we act.

What say you?
